1934 Eldredge-McInnis Sloop

Originally constructed  by L.I. Snow Rockland Maine in 1934, to Eldredge-McInnes design. Past and present owners have refurbished her through her lifetime. Miwarawa has been meticulously upgraded, maintained and owned by the current owner since 1973.  Most substantial and complete rebuild made from 1998-2003 at Riverside Boat Yard, Newcastle Maine. Oak keel, stem, framing, floors and deck beams. Cedar planking. Transom: varnished mahogany. Everdur silicon-bronze fastenings.  Pine and cedar deck. Has fresh white paint topsides, gold painted cove stripe, red bottom paint. Sitka spruce spars also varnished this season. Lead keel with bronze keelbolts. Teak handrails. Large, comfortable cockpit painted grey with starboard side lazerette and inspection ports for engine and steering gear inspections.

Below decks, Miwarana sleeps two to three in full length settees port and starboard in main cabin, and quarter berth aft to port. The forepeak provides a stowage area for sails, luggage and gear with shelving outboard. There are two cubbies forward, and ambient light and ventilation below provided by two hatches and a total of eight bronze framed opening ports (all with screens). The marine head (with holding tank) is just abaft the mast. Settees port and starboard with shelving outboard (mahogany fiddles) and some stowage beneath settees. Royal blue cushions. Aft in main cabin to starboard is a sink with hand pump and ice box, and stowage beneath sink. Engine access is available by removal of companionway steps. Port of the companionway is a hanging locker and quarterberth. An adjustable bronze vent is to port of the companionway. Painted fir cabin sole. Interior painted white with varnished ceilings.

25 HP Universal diesel engine (135 hours), installed 2003. Engine access is excellent via hatch in cockpit and from the companionway. Tiller steering, two bladed bronze propeller.

Sails well and able. Main (Port Sails) and jib (Halsey) sails in good condition, having been cleaned and stored professionally. Sail covers.The bowsprit gives enables a fuller jib to be utilized that can make all the difference in summertime light wind. Varnished Sitka spruce mast and boom, stainless steel standing rigging with bronze turnbuckles. Teak bowsprit (which may be unique to this design), bronze main and jib travelers. Wooden and bronze blocks. Bronze winch on cabin roof.

Miwarana is an attractive classic coastal cruiser. A sweet day sailor that has also capably sailed the New England coast, her moderate draft enabling her to gunkhole in many coves and bays. The present owner and family have sailed Miwarana downeast to cruise mid Maine several times.

Note: Recent photographs (September 2015) are of Miwarana unstepped in storage. Booms are being varnished and bottom prep'ed. Sailing photos are from the late 1970s. Her history includes several rebuilds, notably 2003, however her sailing abilities remain timeless.

Historical note: Walter McInnis and L. Francis Herreshoff were good friends and colleagues. Eldredge-McInnis Inc are noted for designing and building many well proportioned sailing craft. McInnis was a noted designer of motorsailers, fishing vessels, USCG patrol boats and during US prohibition: rumrunners. It is said his Rum-runners were always a little faster than the Federal boats he built.
